Herbal Skincare Beauty Products
Herbs have been used as beauty aids for thousands of years, and up until the twentieth century, most beauty products were made at home from natural ingredients and herbs. Today, of course, beauty products are mass-produced, but many people still prefer to make their own. Home concocted beauty products assure the makers of their product’s purity.
Herbal ingredients can make your skin feel and look better. But skin beauty is also affected by health, diet, exercise, and the amount of exposure to the sun.
- 1/2 cup dried chamomile (or sage, for a stronger astringent)
- 1/2 cup vodka
- 4 drops of tincture of benzoin
Put half of the chamomile in a jar and pour the vodka over it. Cap the jar tightly and let stand for a week. Strain, reserving the liquid and adding the rest of the chamomile. Let it stand another week. Strain put in a clean bottle, add the benzoin, cap the bottle and shake well. This can be kept in the refrigerator, and it is for external use only. Your face will love it.
Basic Hand Lotion
- 1/2 cup rose water
- 1/4 cup glycerin
Blend rose water with the glycerin until it’s smooth. Pour into a clean jar and cap.
Basic Cold Cream
- 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 1 tablespoon white beeswax (available where sewing notions are sold)
- 2 tablespoons anhydrous lanolin (available from specialty druggists)
- 2 tablespoons rose water
- 3 drops essential oil (rose, lavender, peppermint, or your favorite)
In a blender mix the aloe gel and the oil thoroughly. Set aside. Melt the beeswax and lanolin in top of a double boiler. Slowly stir into the oil mix. Stir in the rose water and essential oil. Stir until cool and thickened. for into a jar and cap.
Papaya Skin Flaker
An enzyme in the papaya fruit helps remove flaky dried skin. Don’t leave on too long, as it tends to dry the skin. Moisturize after you use it.
Cut a wedge from the ripe papaya, scrape out seeds, mash the pulp and smooth it over your skin. After about 5 minutes, wipe it off with a washcloth. Splash your face with cold water and apply moisturizer. Very effective.
